Hey, Hey, Hey, It’s Social Media Day!
Today we celebrate Social Media Day. I’ve always longed for a holiday to celebrate technology. And now, thanks to Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore, I finally have one.
With each passing day, we find ourselves adjusting to social media being such an important part of our daily lives. With just about everything you do on the Internet these days, you’re participating – knowingly or otherwise – in the social sphere. While Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Google Buzz are obvious social media vehicles, the social web’s nearing the status of omnipresent.
Here are just a few lesser known pieces of the social media pie:
- Netflix: Netflix’s complex movie rating and recommendation algorithm provides its users with movie suggestions based on not only their tastes, but the tastes of people who are like them. And, of course, there’s always the commenting system that’s unique to each title.
- E-Commerce: When you purchase something from Amazon, or just about any other online retailer, you’re participating in social media. Did you rate the product you just purchased? Did you read the online reviews before making your purchase? Yep, that’s social web.
- Blogs: Do you read ’em or write ’em? Do you participate in the conversation? Social media … CHECK.
It’s a bit early to say that Social Media Day will be widely recognized any time soon, but as social media becomes more of a fixture in the world around us, the likelihood of widespread fanfare becomes a realistic proposition. For now, it looks as if Social Media Day needs to settle for 634 Mashable Meetups with more than 11,000 participants.
